YWCA has worked toward Racial Justice since the 1800s, and today, we remain committed to our intersectional mission to Eliminate Racism and Empower Women. During Black History Month, learn more about our racial justice programming: bit.ly/48Tg79W

Bodily Autonomy

Bodily autonomy is one of the most fundamental rights we have as human beings & is foundational to Gender Equality and Racial Justice. YWCA’s work to Eliminate Racism and Empower Women has long included our passionate advocacy for bodily autonomy: bit.ly/483UnHi

Black women have always been at the forefront of change in America. Sojourner Truth’s powerful speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” (read it here: bit.ly/3UqvAdj) reminds us that the struggle for Gender Equality and bodily autonomy are not subjects of new age thinking. During Black History Month 2024, we proudly highlight the work of the exceptional Black women who paved the way forward.

Women’s Financial Empowerment/Caregiving

Women’s financial empowerment is essential to the work we do at YWCA, ensuring women — especially women of color — are empowered to pursue their dreams and be financially independent. During #BlackHistoryMonth, learn about our empowerment programming: bit.ly/3vPTQLo

Transportation

Transportation inequality, and the effects it had on the Black community, gave cause to both the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 and the creation of The Freedom Riders — both powerful demonstrations resulting in SCOTUS ruling segregation on public buses unconstitutional. Black History Month 2024, we celebrate the work carried out by those before us.

We are proud to rerelease “The Rising Tide of Racial Consciousness” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., originally published in the December 1960 issue of YWCA Magazine. The eloquence and booming veracity in his written words jump off the pages with the same strength he demonstrated in public, and they reverberate just as powerfully today: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Therefore, no American can afford to be apathetic about the problem of racial justice.”
