Childcare programs at YWCA Contra Costa/Sacramento

The childcare programs of the YWCA Contra Costa/Sacramento are available in many locations, all staffed by licensed child care staff.
Our childcare programs help children develop physically, socially and emotionally. Children learn how to get along with others and develop communication skills. We have programs for children two to seven years old:

General childcare (age 2)
 Preschool (ages 3 to 5)
School age (kindergarten through first grade)

We also give meals and snacks to all children in our childcare programs. All of our Childcare Programs are Government Subsidized with the exception of the Hidden Valley Elementry Private after-school program located in Martinez for Kindergarten and first grade.

Caring for Children

It’s been said that play is a child’s job. It’s how children learn, explore and develop. At the YWCA of Contra Costa/ Sacramento, our childcare programs encourage play as a way of developing a child’s social and language skills, their physical and mental abilities, and their creativity.

We offer several programs for children of different ages and needs, all delivered in licensed facilities by qualified teachers and staff. Because individual attention is important, there typically is one adult for every eight children in our preschool classes; one adult to every four children in our general childcare classes; and one adult for every 14 children in the school-age program. In total, we care for more than 300 children.  (See chart)

General Childcare

These programs provide year-round, all-day care for children age two. Individual and small activities focus on developing the emotional and social skills children will need when they start school. Children get breakfast, lunch and a snack. Classes are held Monday to Friday. Hours 8 AM to 5 PM. Because our programs are funded in part by the State of California, care is provided at no or low cost to parents who:

• Meet the state income requirements, and
Work OR are seeking employment OR are attending school or job training OR are unable to work because of disability.

Programs for general child care are offered at Bay Point, Richmond, and Mary Rocha.

California State Preschool Program (CSPP) is for children ages three to five.
These children will be learning how to get ready for kindergarten. Teachers will provide academic learning such as focusing on recognizing and writing their names, numbers, shapes, colors. They will also learn the correct ways of cutting and gluing. Other skills that will be taught are social skills, such as learning how to line up, take turns, resolve problems on their own, etc. Children get breakfast, lunch and a snack during the full-day program and breakfast in the morning, for the morning part-day program, lunch in the afternoon, part-day program afternoon program.

We offer a part day program that runs for three hours each day, and a full day, for those parents that need all day care. In order to qualify for this program, parents must meet income eligibility and for the full day preschool, the basis of needing care for their child as listed above under General Care. Sites that offer CSPP are: Richmond, Delta (full and part-day), Bay Point, Antioch (full and part-day), and Oakley (full and part-day). Programs are from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM depending upon the site.
